747
The 747 is arguably one of the most revolutionary aircraft ever designed. The 747 is a four engine jet airliner with 2 decks. However, the second deck only stretches along half of the aircraft. The 747 is the first airliner to have two decks. The aircraft was designed in 1968 and was first flown in 1969. In 1979, the aircraft was brought by launch customer, Pan American World Airways. Boeing launched the 747-8 in 2011 and that aircraft is the newest variant of the 747. The 747 was developed into the Dreamlifter. The Dreamlifter is a cargo aircraft which transports aircraft parts. The aircraft has a bigger fuselage than that of the regular 747-400. The 747 was involved in a horrific, tragic accident: in March 1977, two 747 passenger jets (operating on behalf of Pan American and KLM) collided on the Spanish island of Tenerife. The crash was caused by Air Traffic Control error and the crash resulted in the death of 583 people. The accident is known as the worst crash in aviation history.
