Model airport

Have you ever wanted to create a model airport to display your model aircraft? Or perhaps you want to get into the hobby of collecting model planes? Have you also sometimes wanted to start making an airport and/or start collecting models for the airport but don't know where to start? Well we can help you. Once, even us at AviationHighLife found making a model airport hard. Once, we just hadn't enough money to buy the aircraft for the airport. It all starts with an airport made with a lot of effort, but it still looks like a pile of trash. But once you continue getting ideas and inspiration, you will eventually find yourself creating multiple airports at least every month! And every airport you make will be better than the last. We used YouTube to help us. By watching videos on how to make model airports, we eventually got inspired, but there just wasn't any YouTube Channel or video that could help us, until we found Aviation18. Aviation18 explained everything step by step and even showed what materials you need. This inspired us to make our airport. We are actually rather proud of our creation. Scroll down and find sections on how to make your own model airport and we hope that this helps. After you scroll down to the end of the model airport section you will find a section on model aircraft. Surface

To start making your model airport, you will need a surface to put it on. After all, how could you draw your taxiways or runways without a surface? How would your aircraft be stable? Most people use wood to create their model airports. Wood is strong and easy to paint, unlike paper, it does not coil up when you apply glue or paint on it. And wood doesn't bend. However, we at AviationHighLife have found an almost identical, cheaper and lighter option. Posterboard. Posterboard is a foam board which usually comes in A2 sizes A1 sizes and sometimes even A0 sizes. When you choose a surface, it should be suited to the scale of the aircraft. Scales of model aircraft include, 1:200, a giant size which will require a massive board, 1:400, the standard size which will be used in the tutorial (this is the size we will base everything upon) and 1:500, a smaller size which leaves you stuck with only one manufacturer, Herpa. For 1:400, it is better to use an A1 or A0  sized board.

Paper Sizes

runways and markings

To make your runway, you can either paint, draw or print out foils from the internet. In our tutorial, we use paper and colour with pencil. Our one may look messy, but you can do it neater, we first drew the markings on the runway (except the taxiways) then stuck it down using our tape. Afterwards we made our terminal (see below for how to make your terminal) then started to make our parking stands. The way we did this was by getting our Geminijets Emirates 777-200LR and drawing around it with a ruler, then, we took the plane away and completed our drawing. Then, we took our small Boeing MD-80 and drew the stand inside our widebody gate. After this, we added markings to our airport such as taxiways, this was done using a yellow thin pen.

foliage

You may want to add some grass and trees, this will give your airport an added sense of realism. You can get these at your local hobby store, or you may want to try some hobby websites. Remember though, don't feel pressured to add foliage, it's optional.

thank you!

Lastly, we would like to thank you for taking the time to look at the website. We do want to improve, so if you have any suggestions, questions or facts for us, feel free to contact us. If you would like to see this tutorial in more detail, watch our video.
